Understanding AA

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions.

A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes.

Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

You Don't Have to Be Sure You're an Alcoholic

Many people come to AA unsure whether they belong. That’s okay. AA suggests “keep coming back” as a way to find clarity over time. Tools like the “12 Questions” or personal stories in the AA Grapevine can help someone reflect. There’s no pressure to commit or label yourself right away—just showing up is enough to begin.

There is Hope - You Are Not Alone

No matter how far someone has gone with their drinking, someone in AA has been there too. The program works for people from all walks of life, and thousands have found freedom and a new way of living. AA offers connection, support, and direction—and it’s always there when you’re ready.

“We are people who normally would not mix. But there exists among us a fellowship, a friendliness, and an understanding which is indescribably wonderful.”

What To Expect

Understanding the Flow of AA Meetings

AA meetings are designed to be welcoming and supportive environments. Typically, meetings begin with a reading from AA literature, followed by members sharing their experiences. Participation is voluntary, and there is no pressure to speak. Meetings often conclude with a group prayer or reflection. Rest assured, there are no fees or obligations, and newcomers are encouraged to observe and absorb the experience at their own pace.
